A recent side event at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) SMR Conference brought together experts to discuss the role of women in advancing the nuclear industry. The panel, moderated by Aline Des Cloizeaux, highlighted the need to close the nuclear gender gap.

Research presentations by Niina Kiviluoma and Richard Ollington revealed that women tend to be less supportive of nuclear energy than men. Reelika Runnel, President of WiN Estonia, shared similar findings from her country, where 72% of men supported nuclear energy, while most women preferred alternative energy sources.
Speakers emphasized the importance of male allies, professional networks, and opportunities for women in the industry. Laure Claquin encouraged women to join SMR start-ups, citing the potential for innovation and growth. Former IAEA fellow Diana M. highlighted the potential of SMRs to empower women entrepreneurs.
The event concluded with a call to action from Maria Korsnick: “Let’s work together to make nuclear attractive to women and accelerate progress through innovation.” The conference was hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy, and WiN IAEA was represented by Aline Des Cloizeaux.
